Terraced Gardens Terraced Gardens encompasses 6.8ha on a hill down Dehra Doon Road in the lush Riwaka Valley. The Valley is famous for its warm sheltered micro-climate caused by the mountains that cut off the more extreme weather from the West Coast. Our climate is so mild that we have thriving avocado and macadamia trees. Although we also have plum and hazelnut trees, our main business is growing flowers (especially sunflowers) and foliage for the florist trade. We also have a forest of pinus radiata and grow Christmas trees for families wishing to select and cut their own tree. Our chalets are nestled on the hill amongst magnolias, eucalyptus, lophomytus and grevillea in a park like setting, and visitors are welcome to explore the forested area or stroll down to the Riwaka River where trout have been seen swimming below the bridge.
Your Hosts John, who is originally from Christchurch and I (Kim, an Australian) were travelling around the South Island some years ago when we discovered the beauty of the Riwaka Valley and Dehra Doon as the locals know it. John, an opal miner and I, a gemmologist, living in the dry and dusty outback of Australia thought this looked like the Garden of Eden to us. We kept returning to the area on holiday on our yearly visits to family and finally found our dream property. It was our plan to build chalets so that we could share the beauty of the area with visitors who would enjoy the wildlife, lush greeness and tranquility as much as we had on our visits. We set about building the type of accommodation we always look for on our travels, spacious, comfortable but with all mod cons.....a home away from home.
